Mindfulness, Romantic Relationship Quality, and Stress Response to Conflict

The way a couple manages relationship conflict is known to impact both physiological stress and subjective well-being. Mindfulness has been shown to buffer the effects of stress and has been associated with romantic relationship quality. Previous research has suggested that attachment anxiety and avoidance partially mediate the relationship between mindfulness and relationship quality, yet not much is known about the role of physiological stress in the association between mindfulness and enhanced relationship outcomes. This thesis replicated the association between mindfulness and enhanced relationship quality, as well as the finding that attachment anxiety and avoidance mediates that association. There was no support for the role of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system response as a mediator of the association between mindfulness and relationship satisfaction. However, attachment mediated the effects of trait mindfulness on both objective and subjective measures of stress.
